Le peuple bulgare vit alors sous la menace des invasions khazars.<br /> Sur son lit de mort, Khan Kubrat appela ses cinq fils, et leur ordonna de ne jamais se séparer, de toujours être ensemble, pour qu’aucun ennemi ne puisse les attaquer. Les khazars lancent leurs attaques à l’annonce de la mort du Khan Koubrat. Les enfants du chef bulgare, cinq fils et une fille, se dispersèrent en fuyant les envahisseurs. Les frères Asparoukh, Kouber et Altsek, partis vers le sud, envoyèrent alors vers leur frère Bayan et leur sœur Houba, faits prisonniers, un faucon à la patte duquel ils avaient attachés un fil blanc, leur annonçant ainsi qu’ils avaient trouvé une terre libre. Voyant ce signe, Bayan et Houba décident de s’enfuir pour aller rejoindre leurs frères, mais ils furent rattrapés au moment de la traversée du Danube alors qu’ils cherchaient un point de passage. Houba attacha à la patte du faucon un fil blanc et le tendit à son frère. Tandis que celui-ci s’apprêtait à libérer l’oiseau, une flèche l’atteint, et son sang colora le fil.<br /> Si Bayan et Houba arrivèrent finalement dans le pays que leur frère Asparoukh avait fondé (sur le territoire de la Bulgarie actuelle), ils étaient au seuil de la mort. Asparoukh fit plusieurs morceaux du fil teinté de blanc et de rouge, et en para ses soldats. Depuis ce jour, le premier de Mars tous les Bulgares sont ornés de martenici rouge et blanc portant leur santé, bonheur et succès.</p> <p>Petite question: Sais-tu si on fête la martenitsa ailleurs qu’en Bulgarie ?
